Have you heard of the saying, “A picture speaks a thousand words”?
In today’s blog, I’ll walk you through a technique that is used in all of my virtual training and students just love it!
The technique is called “quick draw” that helps students learn an abstract topic with ease and also become part of their long term memory.
What is Quick Draw?
Quickdraw is a technique which can be used in the classroom as well as virtually where a facilitator shares a word and asks the students to draw an object that depicts the word.
The topic could be the 6 brain science principles or the 5 scrum values or the 12 Agile principles

Facilitator Guide
- The Facilitator shares one of the six brain science principles- “Images trumps words” and asks the students to draw a picture depicting this statement. For example they might draw a “camera”. Other students draw a “art gallery”, etc. Each student draws the object that comes to mind on a post-it or a blank sheet of paper
- The facilitator continues to share each principle and the students draw an image that comes to mind thats connect with the principle.
3. The facilitator can then split the learners into groups, in the virtual environment they can join breakout rooms. There the learners are invited to a time box for 5 to 6 minutes to take turns and share their beautiful “masterpieces” and why does their drawing connect with the principle.
4. When they come back into the main room, their brain is already primed with the principles and now the facilitator can add things like why the principles are important or what do they mean in more detail.
Where can you use this technique?
This is a great technique to use instead of a lecture to teach abstract topics which are hard to remember.
This technique can also be used to facilitate how your participants are feeling at the moment by having them draw their feelings in a. meeting.
This technique can instantly provide feedback to an instructor as to where the students are with a topic and how much have they grasped it.
This can also be used as a review activity after 8-10 minutes of teaching a concept
Benefits of the Quick Draw Technique
Students get enthusiastic and draw quirky, fun pictures. You and your students might not necessarily be an artist to draw a picture depicting a statement. All you need is a willingness to take part in the activity and drawing something that represents that word or principle
Most often the picture turns into a funny story that excites the participants to interact with each other in the training and explain what they learnt in their own words
This technique takes away the need to teach abstract topics by using boring lectures and connects the learners with each other. The discussions in the breakout rooms help the learners learn the topic in their own words. Again the trainer becomes more of “a guide on the side” rather than “a sage on the stage” imparting knowledge

Scrum, Product Management, and DevOps: Simplifying the jargon
The internet and social media are full of Agile, Scrum, Product Management, and DevOps jargon, including incorrect and misunderstood concepts. This could be problematic for a learner seeking knowledge. Without a course with Scrum Alliance, Scrum.org, or DevOps Institute, this knowledge is difficult to achieve.
The Concepts & Beyond blog is a free suite of articles and videos packaged in tiny chunks. You will learn or refine your knowledge and skills to help your team and organization be effective. When you want to take your knowledge further, we invite you to join us for our Certified ScrumMaster(CSM), Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Certified DevOps Engineering Foundations (DOEF) and Training from the Back of The Room courses across the USA and Canada.
